Nutrition and Socialising

The enjoyment and sharing of food has always been one of the best ways that we can socialise as a community.

At Heath Lodge, we provide classic meals which evoke memories of days gone by, specialised menus including high protein foods and nutritional content, and a social setting where residents can sit together and talk as they eat.

We also make sure to celebrate special occasions, whether those are birthdays, anniversaries, national holidays or anything else!

Reminiscence and Cognitive Activities

We use images, music, activities and stories from the resident's youth.
While short term memory fades, long-term emotional memories often remain intact. Listening to favourite songs from years gone by, or looking at old photographs or buildings can sometimes help a resident feel like their old selves again, allowing them to share stories and reduce agitation.

Reminiscence therapy provides a sense of competence. When a resident can remember and talk about their past, it boosts self esteem and reduces the frustration of memory gaps.

Sunshine, seaside and silliness!

We take regular trips to the Yorkshire seaside, local attractions and the shops in Boroughbridge. Everywhere we go with our residents helps to stimulate the brain, assisting with memory retention and fun on the day!
Residents are all members of the Boroughbridge community, and we are very proud of the association that we have with the town, it's businesses and it's residents.
We visit places that our residents have known for years, like the local market or the shops. These trips help maintain a sense of normal life, and even if a resident cannot remember the details of their excursion, the positive emotional state afterwards can last for days, leading to better sleep, a healthier appetite and improved mood.

Socialising and forming friendships

We facilitate group sessions, intergenerational visits, visiting entertainers, seasonal activities and so much more!

We believe that social interaction, creativity and fun all contribute to helping to keep the brain active and engaged. Conversations and problem solving helps the brain to process language and social cues, which can help slow the decline of communication skills.
