Puzzles for Pensioners

Not-for-profit care provider Harrogate Neighbours has joined forces with Knaresborough Library to launch Puzzles for Pensioners, a brand-new community initiative funded by the Rotary Club of Knaresborough. Designed to bring companionship, conversation, and mental stimulation directly into the homes of older residents, the program addresses growing concerns around social isolation and cognitive decline across Knaresborough and surrounding rural areas such as Scriven, Calcutt, and Follifoot.

A recent North Yorkshire Council report highlighted loneliness as a critical issue for older adults, calling for community-led efforts that foster social engagement. Puzzles for Pensioners tackles this challenge directly—helping seniors avoid the "TV Trap" of passive media by delivering custom "Toolboxes of Engagement" filled with jigsaw puzzles, large-print crosswords, and tactile games.

Starting Monday, 1st September, members of the public are invited to drop off complete adult jigsaw puzzles and games at a dedicated collection point inside Knaresborough Library. Donated materials will be delivered to residents opted into the scheme and alongside Harrogate Neighbours' daily Meals on Wheels (Food Angels) service.

Beyond activity kits, trained team members—led by Development and Communications Manager Jamie Nicholson-Ruther—will spend time visiting isolated residents, engaging in games, and offering a vital human touchpoint. This regular contact serves as an early-warning system to identify subtle shifts in health, hygiene, or mood before they become serious concerns.

"For many of the people we visit, a friendly chat can be just as valuable as the meal itself," said Jamie Nicholson-Ruther. "A puzzle gives us something to enjoy together, sparks conversation, and creates a real sense of achievement. We hope local residents will check their cupboards and donate puzzles they are no longer using to make a meaningful difference."

"Loneliness isn't always visible," added Cllr Simon Myers, Executive Member for Libraries at North Yorkshire Council. "This initiative is about much more than puzzles. It's about creating moments of connection, bringing joy into someone's week, and helping people continue living independently in their own homes for longer."
